Winch for Forklift - A winch is a mechanical tool which specializes in winding out or pulling in or winding up or letting out the tension of a rope, wire cable, cable or a wire rope. It its most basic form it is constructed of a spool with an attached hand crank. More complicated winches are seen at the heart of machinery like steam shovels, tow trucks and elevators. Sometimes the spool could be referred to as the winch drum. Complex designs have gear assemblies which could be driven by hydraulic, electric, pneumatic or internal combustion drives. Some winches can include a mechanical brake or a solenoid brake or a pawl and ratchet device so as to prevent it from unwinding unless the pawl is retracted.
Most often, the rope or cable is stored on the winch, however the capspan, a similar piece of equipment, does not store the rope. In sailing, when a line is trimmed on a sailboat, the crew member works the winch handle with one hand while tailing the other to be able to maintain tension on the turns. Several winches have a stripper or cleat to be able to maintain tension. These designs are known as "self-tailing" winches.
Often, winches are utilized offstage as part of the mechanism in order to arrange backdrop in large theatrical productions. Lots of times the winches are actually embedded in the stage floor and used in order to move big set pieces on and off stage.
The new generation of winches have been created for snow and water sports allowing the riders to be pulled swiftly across a body of snow or of water. This could stimulate a riding experience that is usually supplied by a snow mobile, wave runner or a boat.
